The Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina received donations Monday to make 13,000 meals as part of drive to stock food supply in the important summer months.
The Food Bank says the 13,000 meals are in addition to the 1.6 million they've already compiled, pushing them closer to their 2 million-meal goal.
Summer is an especially important time for children in need. They get free and reduced lunches at school during the year, but do not have that support when school is out for the summer.
There are 300,000 children in the Food Bank's 34 counties who receive free and reduced lunches, and the annual Summer Stock campaign is an effort to address that.
The Food Bank's goal is to provide 2 million meals this summer. For every $1 donated, the Food Bank can provide five meals, or $10 worth of food.
The community can:
• Donate food at the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina in Raleigh.
• Donate time as a volunteer.
• Donate money on the Food Bank website.
