NC House Dems ask for changes on immigration bill

Democratic lawmakers are asking the architects of a North Carolina House immigration bill to tone down some of its enforcement measures.

The bill up for discussion in a House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday would grant restricted driver's licenses to those living in the country illegally. It also would authorize police to detain anyone they suspect lacks legal residency. The bill also includes restrictions on bond release for those living in the country illegally. It also includes requirements to reimburse the state for incarceration.

Democrats questioned how officers can enforce the Arizona-style detainment rule without drawing lawsuits.

Chief sponsor Rep. Harry Warren of Salisbury said he's open to changes that keep the focus on arresting serious felons.

The committee is expected to take action on the bill next week.
