It's been known as the Bull City, but for 30 consecutive years Durham has also been designated as Tree City USA.
In the latest installment of “Phil Fills In”, Phil Sanchez took a trip to Durham to work with the folks who are in charge of keeping the trees and the city looking beautiful.
“We're arborists, we do tree work for a living,” said Glenn Slaton with Durham Urban Forestry.
Their work is anything but easy. They're the folks you see up in a bucket dozens of feet in the air, cutting away tree limbs that are in danger of falling or in the way of power lines.
“We call this our gym, this is where we get our workout at,” Slaton said.
“We're on call 365, 24/7.”
The team usually consists of six, but with Phil on board it became a seven-member team.
Slaton and his crew didn't take it easy on the anchorman, either. They put Phil to work right away, outfitting him with a helmet, gloves, work pants, the whole get-up.
Phil spent some time 40 feet in the air with a chainsaw, cutting away tree limbs. He also put in some time at the wood chipper.
All in all, it was a successful morning for Phil Sanchez and Slaton's crew.
