Getting that last bit of peanut butter out of the jar will almost always result in a mess known as “peanut butter knuckles.” But now, four N.C. State University students have created a way to avoid the messy task while getting every last drop for your next peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
N.C. State senior Spencer Vaughn and three fellow students were challenged in a design course to create a business or product that could be marketed.
“We decided that was the biggest problem in our lives,” Vaughn said. “Peanut butter knuckles.”
So, Vaughn and his three classmates created Jar with a Twist, a plastic container that pushes all of the contents to the top. No mess, no waste.
“Originally, we thought of a utensil of some kind. But then, we realized the kitchen is already full of over-priced, under-utilized utensils,” Vaughn said.
After much brainstorming, the team realized the tool needed to be in the packaging itself.
“If it’s already packaged in our jar, then it’s much easier for the consumer. And they don’t have to buy another utensil,” Vaughn said.
It took trial and error with several attempts using a 3D printer on campus.
But now with their product fully realized, the group is in what Vaughn called top secret talks with packaging companies. And these companies don’t want Jar with a Twist for just peanut butter and jelly.
“Also for salsa and mayonnaise. And face creams, lotion and what not,” Vaughn said. “Everything that you have to dig into to get out.”
Jars with a Twist could be on store shelves next year, Vaughn said.
