Thousands without power in western NC

Thousands of customers are without power as cold weather grips North Carolina.

Major utilities serving the state reported more than 28,000 customers were without electric service early Tuesday.

Duke Energy reported more than 17,000 customers without service in western North Carolina. The utility had more than 10,000 customers without service in the area previously served by Progress Energy.

Dominion reported nearly 1,000 customers without service in northeastern North Carolina.
