Civil rights icon and poet Maya Angelou dies at 86

Civil rights icon, author and poet, Dr. Maya Angelou, has died at the age of 86, according to CNN.

Angelou was born April 4, 1928 in St. Louis.

Angelou, author of her 1969 autobiography, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” lived in Winston-Salem and taught at Wake Forest University where she was a Reynolds Professor of American Studies.

Angelou was also a figure in the Civil Rights Movement where she served as the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s northern coordinator.
