RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A man believed to be the person seen in a video sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl was a charter organization leader for the Boy Scouts of America, the organization confirmed Tuesday.
William Towner Akers, 46, was arrested in March on federal charges. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said Akers was arrested at Lulu Press on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh thanks to a tip from the public.
Investigators believe Akers is the man seen in a pornographic film sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl. The video was seized from the home of Bailey Mills, a Sanford man convicted of multiple sex offenses involving children.
The Boy Scouts of America would not comment on when Akers was removed from the organization saying “the BSA does not share information about current or former youth members, adult volunteer leaders or our employees.”
Mills was arrested in January 2014 as part of a child porn ring being operated out of his home. Investigators said Mills operated a daycare out of his home, portraying himself to be a tutor, mentor and babysitter.
Mills was arrested after deputies received a tip that he contacted a 12-year-old girl on Facebook about paying her for sex. He was subsequently charged with first-degree rape of a child, first-degree sexual exploitation of a child, statutory rape of a child, first-degree statutory sex offense and indecent liberties with a child.
According to his Linkedin profile, Akers was a development and operations director at Lulu.com.
