The North Carolina House has again agreed to ban children from using tanning beds in the state, citing efforts to protect young people from skin cancer.
The chamber voted 103-12 on Tuesday for legislation that nearly mirrors a bill that passed the House two years ago but stalled in the Senate. This year’s version is named for Rep. Jim Fulghum, who died last year and was a sponsor of the 2013 bill.
Current law prohibits anyone 13 or younger from using tanning salon equipment unless a doctor gives the child a written prescription. Licensing rules require children 14 to 17 to only have a parent’s permission. The bill bars tanning-bed use for everyone under 18.
The measure now goes to the Senate.
