RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Time appears to be running out for the North Carolina legislature to block the state’s impending sale of land where the Dorothea Dix mental hospital stood to the city of Raleigh for a park.

Debate was delayed Tuesday in a Senate committee on legislation to open the Dix property sale to bidding. Bill sponsors who lead the committee suggested it could be considered next week.

Gov. Pat McCrory and Raleigh’s mayor announced in January the city would buy more 300 acres near downtown for $52 million. McCrory said recently he hoped to have the agreement finalized and to the Council of State for approval early next month.

Bill sponsors said they’re concerned that the price tag is too low and about making sure proceeds pay for state mental health services.
