ROWAN COUNTY, NC – (WBTV) – Around $300 was stolen from a charity yard sale organizer in a frightening armed robbery involving a well-known couple.
“I can’t even imagine coming into my home and finding somebody in there,” Brown’s friend Betty Alexander told WBTV. “And then taking the money that was for a good cause, that would be frightening and it’s a shame that people have to go through these things.”
Ralph Brown, a longtime school administrator was robbed at gunpoint in his own basement on Monday night, according to a Salisbury police report.
Brown told police he had noticed two black men walking on Emerald Street near his home, and noted that they were wearing hoods over their heads.
A few minutes later, Brown went down to his basement to look for a phone when he was confronted by the two individuals. Brown said one man pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at him.
The man demanded Brown’s wallet and cash, and as Brown gave it to him, Brown tried to grab the gun.
The gunman managed to push Brown away, and after a brief struggle, the two men ran from the house.
On the way out, one of the men grabbed $300 cash that was in a bowl. The Browns hold popular yard sales twice a year for Cystic Fibrosis research, and the basement of the home serves as the office.
Brown described the gunman as a stocky black man who was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, and tennis shoes with gold trim. The second man is described as a thin black man who was wearing a similar outfit.
Brown was not injured in the robbery.
