A former Hillsborough police corporal has been placed on the North Carolina sex offender registry after pleading guilty in March to two counts of indecent liberties with a minor.
James Riley Jr. pleaded guilty March 23 in Orange County Superior Court to two counts of indecent liberties with a minor. He received a 20- to 33-month sentence with active jail time suspended and was ordered to give up his law enforcement certification.
Riley began working with the Hillsborough Police Department as an officer in January 2004. He was dismissed from his job on July 23, 2013, three days after the town placed him on administrative leave following an internal investigation, the town said in a news release.
In April 2013, Hillsborough received a complaint about possible misconduct of an officer while working an off-duty job.
The Police Department investigated, which included conducting surveillance in July 2013. On July 19, Police observed “potential criminal conduct.”
July 20 and placed Riley on administrative leave. On July 23, the SBI took over the investigation and the town terminated Riley’s employment. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office filed charges against Riley in April 2014.
Riley is on probation and was placed on the state sex offender registry and was ordered to perform community service.
