History, impact of soul food is topic of film at NC Central

The origin of soul food and its impact on African-Americans is the subject of a documentary to be screened at N.C. Central University.

Filmmaker Byron Hurt will be on the campus in Durham on Wednesday for the screening of “Soul Food Junkies,”

Hurt’s film connects culinary traditions to African-American cultural history, beginning with slavery, through the Civil Rights era and beyond. It also examines health consequences, such as hypertension, diabetes and cancer.

Hurt said his own father’s unwillingness to change his diet, despite a major health crisis, spurred him to analyze the roots of the soul food tradition.

Hurt will discuss the film with the audience following the showing, which is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the School of Education Auditorium. The screening is free and open to the public.
