A retired soldier in Lillington has received his Purple Heart for injuries he suffered in the shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.
The Fayetteville Observer reported that retired Staff Sgt. Alonzo Lunsford was shot seven times during a 2009 attack that killed 13 people.
Lunsford received the medal during a ceremony earlier this month at Fort Hood.
Lunsford received the medal from Army Secretary John McHugh and III Corps commander Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland during the ceremony for the survivors and families of those killed in the attack.
Maj. Nidal Hasan has been convicted of premeditated murder and attempted murder. He was sentenced to death in a general court-martial.
Lunsford is now the athletic director and physical education teacher at Alpha Academy in Fayetteville.
