North Carolina’s lieutenant governor and several faith leaders have written an open letter to elected officials in support of a “religious freedom” bill.

Lt. Gov. Dan Forest was one of 27 people who signed the letter, as did the Catholic bishops of both the Raleigh and Charlotte dioceses and the president of the N.C. State Baptist Convention.

They announced the letter Friday, the day after Speaker Tim Moore said the House wouldn’t act on the bill this session. The same Religious Freedom Restoration Act remains in the Senate.

Supporters promote the bill as protecting religious liberties while others criticized it as legalizing discrimination against gays and lesbians.
