During the 70s and 80s, the Raleigh Underground in Cameron Village was the place to be and be seen. R.E.M. used to play there as well as The Police, but suddenly the party stopped in the 80s and the underground space had been quiet and vacant since – until Saturday night.
Pat Boyle, executive director of CVMA is the woman responsible for this elaborate “One Night Only” party underneath Cameron Village and she said it was decades in the making.
“The Raleigh Underground was shut down because the 80s happened. The drinking age got raised and guess what, a little drugs came into the scene.”
Saturday night, organizers brought the Underground back to life one more time. People dressed in their finest, saw a fashion show and played in the arcade. Five hundred tickets sold out in only eight hours.
Sponsors of the event, like Blake Alford with CEI said, “I’m excited but almost sad, because it’s hard to believe it’s going to go away after tonight. It’s so unique.”
Money raised from the party will be going to “Backpack Buddies” a local program that fills backpacks with food for children in need.
