Jason Young’s first trial ended in a hung jury. His second trial ended in a life sentence for murdering his pregnant wife. Now, today, he’s asking the state Supreme Court for a third trial.
Michelle Young was found murdered in their Wake County home in 2006. Jason Young was convicted of that murder in 2012.
In 2014 the state court of appeals said a trial judge shouldn’t have allowed evidence about a wrongful death lawsuit and about child custody issues before Young was convicted of murder. The trial judged declared that Young was responsible for killing his wife after he did not respond to a civil claim.
Both sides were in court today presenting their arguments to the state Supreme Court.
Young was not in court today but several members of Michelle Young’s family were.
Young is currently serving a life sentence. Michelle Young was five months’ pregnant in 2006 when her bloody body was found in their bedroom with their unharmed 2-year-old daughter.
The NC Supreme Court will review the evidence and make a decision in the coming weeks.
