Raleigh police are searching for a man accused of murdering his wife at an apartment complex on Wesvill Court in Raleigh near Rex Hospital Thursday.

The shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the 2400 block of Wesville Court near Wycliff Road.

Police identified the victim as Tonya Lashawn Sutton, 39. Police identified the suspect as the victim’s husband, Michael Rashun Sutton.

In a panicked 911 call, a caller told the dispatcher that the man had “shot up the house.”

“My God, he’s shooting her!” the caller said. “He shot her.”

As the 911 dispatcher asked for more information, the caller said again, “Oh God, he just shot her…the girl was coming out and he shot her. He shot his wife.”

The caller said Tonya Sutton was in his apartment. He told dispatchers he had to jump out of his window because the suspect “shot my door down, kicked my door down and came in.”

“She was with you?” The 911 dispatcher asked.

“Yes,” the caller responded.

“Is he like an ex-husband?” the 911 operator asked.

“I guess they’re still together,” the caller said.

“She’s just laying dead right there,” he said.

Police have charged Sutton with murder in his wife’s death.

Witness Renee Sutton told WNCN she watched the shooter run inside the woman’s apartment.

“I yelled at him three times, he wouldn’t say anything. The door was still open. I heard a scream and I said, ‘Oh my God,’ and then I heard a shot,” recalled Renee Sutton.

“I heard a lot of gunshots and I was over here petrified because my daughter was outside,” said another witness. “I hop up, ran out, grab my daughter and look and I see somebody laying on the ground,” he said.

Police are searching for Michael Sutton. He was last seen wearing khaki pants and a blue shirt.

He is about 5 feet 10 inches tall and is believed to be driving a light blue, two-door 2005 Toyota Solara.

Anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts is asked to call 911 or Raleigh Crime Stoppers at 919-834-HELP.
