Students at Dixon Road Elementary School in Willow Spring were certainly in the spirit of giving Thursday morning as part of Red Nose Day, an effort to help fight childhood poverty and hunger.
About 600 students raised money for the nationwide event.
Teachers say it all started with one classroom getting involved, but the excitement spread quickly to the rest of the school.
“The kids came running to me with dollars so we thought we had something good here so we spread it to the whole school and the whole school got involved and everyone brought their dollars in,” said Maria Lawson, a teacher’s aid.
Teachers and students said they plan to challenge other schools next year to join in.
NBC is airing a “Red Nose Day” special at 8 p.m. on WNCN. The special will be filled with comedy, music and celebrities.
