Carowinds says it will close the Thunder Road wooden roller coaster on July 26.
The amusement park near Charlotte says it will tear down the ride as part of a $50 million renovation plan.
The roller coaster goes through both North Carolina and South Carolina and lasts more than two minutes, reaching speeds of 45 mph. It was built in 1976, three summers after the amusement park opened.
Carowinds says it will hold several events celebrating Thunder Road over the next two months.
