Teacher’s abusive behavior could go back 10 years, mother says

A woman now believes her son was abused 10 years ago by a Cumberland County teacher under investigation after her irate outbursts were caught by a parent who sent her child to school with an audio recorder.

WNCN Investigates immediately took the recording to the superintendent for answers, but the team has now learned this teacher has a history of complaints.

On Wednesday, WNCN talked to Amy McMillan who now lives in Kansas.

She says she filed complaints against the teacher, Evelyn Spell, 10 years ago.

Her son went to Alderman Road Elementary School in 2005 and was also in Spell’s exceptional children class.

McMillan provided WNCN with copies of complaints against Spell that she filed with the principal, the superintendent’s office, the Cumberland County Board of Education, the Department of Public instruction, and even the governor’s office .

McMillan says nothing ever happened.

She says her son kept coming home saying Spell would yell at him in class, but she didn’t believe how bad it was until she heard the recordings now a decade later.

“I wanted to cry,” said McMillan. “It kind of validates everything my son said and I just felt bad,” she added.

WNCN reached out to the School Board and the Department of Public Instruction about these complaints but as of Wednesday night they have not responded to our questions.

The school district will says the teacher is under investigation but at this point they say she is still in the classroom.
