Banner year expected for North Carolina blueberries

blueberriesDry weather this spring should mean another banner year for the North Carolina blueberry crop.

North Carolina Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler says weather is cooperating and the state is seeing some of the highest yields and best-tasting berries in years. Troxler says too much rain during harvest season can damage the crop

Brian Long of the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says almost 49 million pounds of blueberries were produced last year, a state record.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says North Carolina ranked seventh nationally in blueberry production in 2014.
