Officials say a Raleigh man was charged with DWI after an early morning crash in Wake County killed his friend.
The crash happened just before 3 a.m. on Mt. Vernon Church Road and Tredwood Drive. Part of Mt. Vernon Church Road was closed as crews clear the scene.
The man who died, Simon Peter Curran, 21, of Longstreet Dr, Raleigh, was a passenger in a a 2007 Toyota driven by a another Raleigh man, who has since been charged, authorities say.
Morris Lee Wilks II, 20, of Farrington Dr, Raleigh was driving south on Mt. Vernon Church Rd, NC Troopers said.
“The vehicle traveled into a curve, traveled off onto the right shoulder of Mt. Vernon Church Rd, and struck a tree. After impact, the vehicle continued traveling south and struck a rock wall,” said Lt Jeff Gordon of the NC Highway Patrol.
Wilks and Curran are friends on Facebook, according to their profile information. Curran lists Wilks and the other passenger in the car as “brothers” under family members on Facebook — although they are not likely related.
Wilks, who was treated at the scene for minor injuries, was held in the Wake County jail under charges of DWI, reckless driving, and a provisional license violation, Gordon said.
“Investigators are consulting the Wake County DA’s office regarding charges due to the fatality,” Gordon added.
Another teen passenger in the car was treated at the scene.
