A Cary woman and her granddaughter were killed in a wreck on Sunday in Dayton, Ohio where three other members of the Cary family were injured.
Khurshid Chaudhry, 65, and Azan Chaudhry, 5, were killed in a crash on Interstate 75, on the way to a funeral in Chicago, said Sgt. Chris Colbert of the Ohio State Highway Patrol Dayton Post. The accident happened at 4 a.m. while the funeral was set for 1 p.m.
The driver, Rubena Elahi, 27, the mother of Azan and rear passenger, Muhammad Chaudhry, the father of Azan, suffered serious injuries and were taken to the Grandview Medial Center. Izna Chaudhry, the couple’s 2-year-old daughter, was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Troopers said the driver fell asleep and that the two victims were thrown from the van. They said at least some of the occupants, including Azan Chaudhry, were not restrained. Izna Chaudhry remains in the hospital.
The family was traveling north in a Honda Odyssey near the Needmore Road exit when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the road and struck some trees, according to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Dayton Post.
