CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – A Monroe couple is thankful to be alive after a terrifying drive though Davidson County.
Bryan Mcallister says a complete stranger slammed into the back of his SUV multiple times as he was driving through a construction zone on Highway 52.
“This is something you’d see in a horror movie. We felt that he was coming to kill us,” Mcallister said.
Mcallister says he wasn’t doing anything wrong on Saturday night when the pickup truck slammed into him out of nowhere. It didn’t take him long to realize it was no accident.
“My wife’s friend started screaming, ‘he’s coming back, he’s coming back,'” Mcallister said.
Mcallister told WBTV the driver was gunning full speed for them.
“When that impact happened, the drivers seat and the passengers seat where my wife was sitting, went all the way back,” Mcallister said.
They started to dial 911 to report the accident when Mcallister says he heard a chilling sound.
“The first time you think it’s an accident, but you know when you hear the engine revving,” Mcallister said.
Mcallister said he tried to speed away but not before grabbing a glimpse of the make and model of the car. He reported it to troopers who quickly caught up with the driver.
“He had hit three other people in the length of that four-mile stretch,” Mcallister said.
Troopers charged with Joseph Shawn Byran with DWI and hit and run.
And while his SUV took a beating and they have the scrapes and bruises to prove it, Mcallister just feels lucky he’s alive to tell the story.
“We’re grateful to be standing here talking to everybody, and [that] my family members aren’t in that house, or wherever else, planning a funeral for us,” Mcallister said.
