HOPE MILLS, N.C. (WNCN) – Cumberland County Sheriff Deputies are investigating an attempted armed robbery and shooting at a home in the 3600 Block of Lubbock Drive in Hope Mills.
Around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, deputies were dispatched to the 3600 block of Lubbock Drive in reference to an attempted robbery which resulted in the death a man who was believed to be one of the suspects. The man was later identified as Gerald Douglas Raeford of Fayetteville.
When deputies arrived, they talked with the victim who stated that three men approached him while he was entering his vehicle. The men pointed their handguns at him and demanded he hand over his money.
Police said the victim then pulled out a revolver from his vehicle and shot toward the three men, striking one of them. One of the suspects also discharged his weapon, striking the victim in the abdomen.
The suspects fled the scene, but one was found a short time later with a gunshot wound to his chest. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two of the three suspects were still at large as of 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Neighbors are still on edge.
“I can’t believe that it happened that close to my home,” said Rod Roderick. “This is normally a very quiet neighborhood. We have a lot of teenagers and young people but we don’t have any problems like that around here.”
The victim was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment.
Deputies are searching the neighborhood for the two remaining suspects. They should be considered as being armed and dangerous.
“I am going to keep my eyes open and I will be watching the area just in case somebody comes back to retaliate, you never know,” said Roderick.
