AVON, N.C. (WNCN) – Several dozen rooms are a total loss after a late-morning fire at a Dare County motel.

Crews were called to the Avon Motel just before 11:30 Wednesday morning.

A worker at the motel tells WNCN the fire damaged several dozen rooms.  Everyone inside managed to get out safely.  The worker tells WNCN the fire appears to have started in one unit before spreading.  The motel was not at full occupancy, but the worker tells WNCN most of the rooms were booked for the week leading up to the July 4th holiday.

The Outer Banks Voice reports there are traffic delays along N.C. 12 in Hatteras Island.

There’s no word on what caused the fire.
