SPRING LAKE, N.C. (WNCN) – Spring Lake police confirmed alcohol may have played a role in the June 20 accidental drowning of a man who could not swim.
Raheem Kalif Johnson, of E. Manchester Road in Spring Lake, was swimming in an abandoned quarry near North Carolina Highway 210 behind Carolina Sands Mobile Home Park.
Witnesses told police Johnson, 34, was standing on a ledge in the water near a steep drop off around 15 feet from shore.
Witnesses said they saw Johnson struggling in the water. A female witness attempted to help Johnson but he began to pull her under the water.
The witness attempted to help Johnson again but he disappeared in the water.
The father of two witnesses dove into the water in an attempt to search for Johnson.
Police said the father continued to search until the Fort Bragg Search and Rescue and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Dive Teams arrived.
Dive teams located the body of water for around three hours before locating Johnson’s body.
Police believe alcohol may have played a role in Johnson’s accidental drowning based on witness statements.
Johnson was a New Jersey native.
