Wounded Fort Bragg veteran gets new home in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – An Army veteran of Fort Bragg was handed the keys to a brand new home in Raleigh courtesy of Operation: Coming Home.

Staff Sgt. Timothy Payne trained with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville and deployed to the Middle East three times.

He was injured during a combat patrol in Afghanistan’s Kandahar Province, losing both his legs and severely injuring his left hand.

After recovering at the Walter Reed National Medical Center, Payne now has a new look on life.

“I’m just extremely thankful for everyone’s support,” said Payne.

He channeled his loss into a positive outlook – writing his own story, titled “The Squad Leader’s Bargain.”

This home marks the 10th Hero Home the organization has built for disabled combat veterans who have served in the Middle East.

The 82nd Airborne Band and 82nd Airborne Chorus from Fort Bragg were also in attendance.
