DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A Durham County mother and son were injured early Friday morning after a fire ripped through their home in the 5800 block of N. Roxboro Road in Durham County.
The Durham Fire Department was called around 4:22 a.m. Friday to assist the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department with a structure fire at 5834 N. Roxboro Road.
Family members say 80-year-old Margaret Spruill and her son John were sleeping when the fire broke out. John was able to get himself out, but Margaret was not.
Firefighters rescued Spruill and both she and her son taken to UNC Hospitals with severe burns.
Family members said they woke up to the horrible news.
“The worst thing to see your momma’s house burning up on the news and you can’t get right to her. That’s horrible,” said Melissa Spruill, family member. “I hit my knees. That’s my grandmother, that’s my uncle.”
Spruill said her grandma and uncle were both in critical condition as far as she knew.
Fire officials said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but they believe it was accidental.
