EMERALD ISLE, N.C. (WNCN) Two people remain in critical condition after a deck collapsed in Emerald Isle Saturday.
A family from Virginia was vacationing at the home and was posing for a family picture Saturday evening when the deck gave way, WNCT reported.
Dozens of people were sent to area hospitals for treatment and two of them remained critical Monday. A spokesperson for Carteret General told WNCT that 17 people had been released from the hospital.
WNCT reported the victims’ ages ranged from 5-94. The group was renting the house, which was built in 1986, and was spending their last night on the island before heading home on Saturday
The cause of the collapse is still under investigation; however initial reports indicate that old nails in the floor boards are to blame.
Officials said there is no state requirement for inspections of rental properties and that the responsibility lies on the property owner and the management company Blue Water Realty, WNCT reported.
Blue Water Realty released a statement asking for the community to rally around the families.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and others for injuries received in this horrible accident. We are also asking everyone in this community for their thoughts and prayers for this family,” the statement read.
