SANFORD, NC (WNCN)- A recent Carrboro High School graduate died after an incident involving a boat trailer near Sanford on Tuesday night, officials say.

Twenty-year-old Allison Bennett, a 2013 Carrboro High graduate, was riding in the front of a ski boat being pulled on a trailer by a truck around 10 p.m. in the golf community of Carolina Lakes, said North Carolina Highway Patrol officials.

When the truck was near Buffalo Lakes, vehicle drifted off the road and then over-corrected, causing Bennett to fall out, troopers said.

After falling out, Bennett fell into the roadway where she was hit by the trailer.

The driver of the truck, Anthony James Pantano, 29, a soldier in the U.S. Army’s Special Forces, left the scene in his vehicle after he stopped as other passengers checked on Bennett, the Highway Patrol said.

Bennett was rushed to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, but died there later.

A Facebook page that appears to belong to Bennett contains photos showing her with friends and family boating on the lake in the hours before her death.

The Highway Patrol and agents from Alcohol Law Enforcement are working with the U.S. Army to locate Pantano.

Patano faces charges of felony death by motor vehicle, felony hit-and-run, driving while impaired and careless and reckless driving.
