WAXHAW, NC (WBTV) — The driver in a fatal Saturday night crash that killed a 16-year-old girl and injured six others has been charged. Troopers say alcohol was a factor in the Union County crash.
Autumn Plyler from Waxhaw, one of the passengers in the vehicle, died in the accident. The NC State Highway Patrol says Kemthia Garlins, 20, has been charged with driving while impaired.
The single-vehicle crash happened before midnight Saturday night on Lancaster Highway near Big Horne Lane, that’s just outside of the Waxhaw city limits.
The Jackson Volunteer Fire Department was the first official unit to arrive on the scene and they say the driver lost control and went off the right side of the road. When the driver over corrected, the vehicle crossed the center line, and went off the right side of the road before coming to a stop when it hit a tree.
One person had to be airlifted in critical condition from the scene and five others were driven to the hospital. Officials have not released how they are doing.
