1,200 pigs die in fire at North Carolina farm

Fire at Eastern NC farm

WALLACE, N.C. (WECT) – Roughly 1,200 pigs died in a fire on a Pender County farm, according to officials with Pender County Emergency Management.

Tommy Batson, the Deputy Fire Marshal, said the call came in around 6:30 a.m. on Friday.

When crews got to the scene in the 500 block of Bulltail Road, they saw one pig house had burned to the ground.

The Shiloh, Penderlea and Harrells Fire Department (out of Sampson County) responded.

Local and federal agencies are investigating to see what caused the fire.

Batson said federal agencies are involved because the fire dealt with commerce.
