FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Fayetteville State University has agreed to review its women’s athletic programs after getting a complaint about funding equality.

The Fayetteville Observer reported the NCAA Division II school agreed to conduct the review rather than challenge a complaint filed with the U.S. Education Department.

The department’s Office of Civil Rights received a complaint by former members of the Fayetteville State’s softball team and their families.

They contend that women’s teams have received less financial support and suffered inferior treatment to the men’s teams, a violation of Title IX laws. Those 1972 laws make gender discrimination illegal in educational programs or activities that receive federal funding.

By signing the agreement the school does not admit violating the federal law. But it must demonstrate it is in compliance by June 1, 2018.
