SURF CITY, N.C. (WECT) – A barge struck the fender system of the Topsail Island Bridge Sunday.

The accident happened at 12:10 p.m. Sunday, according to Petty Officer Persoon with the United States Coast Guard.

He said a tug boat pushing a barge ran into the structure. He believes the combination of wind, current, and over-correction by the boat operator may have led to the accident.

Persoon said the actual bridge did not sustain any structural damage, but part of the wooden fender system surrounding the bridge was broken up.

He said the bridge is now operating normally.

Persoon said vehicular traffic was not impacted by the incident, but maritime traffic had to be delayed for a period of time.

Officers from the Surf City Police Department initially responded to the scene.

Persoon explained boaters traveling in the area need to proceed with caution due to debris in the water and that the USCG alerted boaters of the situation through the maritime radio station.

The USCG is investigating the incident.
