Buckle up: Fortify lane reductions may add 30 minutes to your commute

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Drivers heading through the I-40 Fortify Rebuild work zone this weekend will see some lane shifts, and that will likely mean a longer ride.

The North Carolina DOT says lane reductions will lead increase travel times, starting with Friday morning’s commute.

Lanes are being reduced from the usual four to five lanes, down to just three lanes, in the area between Lake Wheeler Road and South Saunders Street. Crews are working to shift traffic as they work their way eastward toward the I-40/I-440 split.

What should you expect? The DOT says increased travel times, especially Friday afternoon. The DOT estimates the new traffic pattern could add about 30 minutes to your morning and afternoon commute. If there is an accident or bad weather, it could be even longer.

Once the shifts and reductions are in place, construction crews will begin to tear up the inside lanes. The work is happening overnight, weather dependent.
