RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – One person was killed in an accident at Ray Road near the Laurel Mountain Road intersection Friday evening, Raleigh Police said.
A police investigation shows that Donald Ray Akin, 68, was operating a 2014 Jeep SUV heading south on Laurel Mountain Road. Tony McDonald, 35, was driving a 2001 Mack truck and pulling a flatbed trailer with construction equipment on it while traveling west on Ray Road.
Akin stopped at the intersection of the two roads and attempted to cross Ray Road in the path of McDonald’s truck. McDonald slammed on his breaks and steered his truck to the left in an attempt to avoid hitting Akin’s Jeep, police said.
Both vehicles left the roadway after the collision occurred. Akin was pronounced dead at the scene. McDonald was not injured.
Traffic was diverted for around six hours while the wreck was investigated and the scene was cleared.
No charges have been filed and none are expected, police said.
