DURHAM, NC (WNCN) — Nearly 50 firefighters were on the scene of a structure fire on Sunday that left a dog dead and 14 people displaced from four apartments.
At 12:20 p.m. the Durham Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 911 Wadesboro Street, just off Lynn Road, said Chris Iannuzzi, Durham Fire Deputy Chief.
On arrival firefighters reported heavy fire and smoke from the stairway between the first and second floors of a two story apartment building. A second floor apartment was severely damaged by fire, and the attic incurred fire damage as well, Iannuzzi said.
The apartment below the fire room received heavy water damage. Two adjacent apartments incurred smoke damage and damage from efforts to find hidden fire in the walls.
“There were no human injuries; but despite resuscitation efforts by firefighters, a dog did not survive the fire,” Iannuzzi said.
The American Red Cross is assisting five adults and nine children that were displaced from four apartments. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Forty-six firefighters, including five from Durham County, responded to the call. Firefighters were on the scene for three and one-half hours.
