Senate eases punishment for minors in NC ‘revenge porn’ bill

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina senators have scaled back proposed punishments for young people and first-time offenders should the state’s first “revenge porn” law be enacted.

The Senate gave final approval Wednesday to the measure, which would make it illegal to post nude or sexual images of a person without their consent and with the intent to identify the person and cause them harm.

The chamber voted 28-15 to change the bill so that only people at least 18 years old would be guilty of a felony on a first offense, potentially punishable by up to eight months behind bars with an otherwise clean record. Minors would face a misdemeanor, raised to a felony for a repeat offense.

The measure now returns to the House, which must decide whether to accept the changes.
