Crayons2Calculators wants to ‘Fill that Bus!’ with school supplies for Durham kids and teachers

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – Children will soon be going back to school and one organization in Durham is making sure everyone – students and teachers – have the supplies they need for a successful year.

The nonprofit Crayons2Calculators is helping to do just that with their “Fill that Bus!” school supply drive.

The organization collects supplies for teachers working in Durham County public school. They give teacher’s supplies that they often have to buy with their own money.

The drive is something that Crayons2Calculators does every year and it’s a major community-wide event.

Last year the group collected more than $100,000 in school supplies and they hope to collect even more this year.

Once the supplies are collected, they will be distributed to teachers throughout the county.

Some teachers said they spend $500 to $1,000 out of their own pocket to supply their classrooms each year.

“That’s a regular occurrence across the country, especially in the high-needs schools,” said Crayons2Calculators Executive Director Julie Marshall. “Teachers are spending much closer to $1,000 [and] if we can keep them from doing that, [we’re] more than happy to help.”

The organization is holding a collection drive Friday at the Chick-fil-A on Roxboro Road in Durham until 3 p.m.
