Man charged in collision that seriously injured cyclist in Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) – A man has been charged after hitting and seriously injuring a cyclist Tuesday afternoon in Chapel Hill, police announced Friday.

A cyclist identified as Kayley Marie Lyons, 27, of Chapel Hill, was hit while cycling on S. Columbia Street in Chapel Hill at approximately 4:20 p.m. on August 4. The driver who hit her, Michael Harold Ranes, 64, of Kittrell, is facing one charge of unsafe movement and one charge of reckless driving.

Authorities said that Lyons was traveling northbound on S. Columbia and Ranes was traveling north on S. Columbia making a right turn on E. Franklin Street when he hit her.

Lyons was transported to UNC Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
