RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Friday marks the last Friday sidewalk patios in downtown Raleigh will stay open past 1 a.m.
Beginning next week, sidewalk patios will close at midnight Sunday through Thursday and at 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
The new ordinance is an effort to cut down on noise and litter in downtown.
“I think it’s a good idea because it kind of gives a compromise between people want to get some sleep right and people wanting to have fun,” said bar patron Margarita Lopez.
Brian Whitley, manager of Common 414, said the new rule will hit hard.
“It will just make things a lot harder for our businesses because of the crowd we do get outside. Having to shut it down at 1 a.m. right at the peak of downtown will be very difficult,” Whitely said.
Whitely said about 90 percent of revenue for Common 414 is made between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. on the weekends.
Because of the new rules, Whitley said his business didn’t even renew its patio permit.
He hopes things will change when council reviews the rule in three months.
Of course by then, it won’t really be patio season anymore.
