Memorial planned for NC teen who died after collapsing at cross country tryouts

THOMASVILLE, NC (WNCN) — A memorial will be held for a North Carolina teen girl who died after collapsing during cross country tryouts on Thursday.

Allison Kiah Brown, age 14, collapsed at Southern Guilford High School about 9:15 a.m. Thursday and died later at Moses Cone Hospital. A cause of death has not been released.

District officials say Brown collapsed after finishing a 3-mile run during the second day of tryouts for the school’s cross-country team.

Allison was a student/athlete at Southern Guilford High School, where she was a straight A student, and “had a passion for running, basketball, the outdoors and music,” her obituary said.

Allison attended Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church and Hope City Church, according to her obituary.

“She was a ‘selfie’ enthusiast,” her obituary said.

Allison’s father, Benjie Brown and her grandfather, Allen Brown, were both Thomasville High football coaches and both won multiple state championships, the News & Record of Greensboro reported.

A celebration of Allison’s life will be held on Monday at 4:30 p.m. at the T. Austin Finch Auditorium in Thomasville with Rev. Ben K. Shepherd, Rev. Scott Newton, and Rev. Bradley Hill officiating.

J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville is assisting the family.
