RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — New details were revealed Wednesday — including where the stash of up to $500,000 was kept — after a Raleigh mom and her son along with 3 others were charged in connection with a July robbery of the Walnut Creek Amphitheatre, police said.
Four of the 5 suspects, who were arrested on Tuesday were in court on Wednesday and authorities revealed the roles of some in the robbery — and where the loot was hidden afterwards.
Adjani Jari Bryant, 22, was already nabbed the day after the July 13 robbery and faces six counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, and five counts second-degree kidnapping, Raleigh Police say.
In a 911 call, a victim told a dispatcher armed robbers took $500,000 from the Walnut Creek Amphitheatre.
The caller says three suspects came in with guns and wearing masks. Raleigh police said the robbers hit the venue around 11:30 a.m.
Authorities said the stolen money was apparently stashed in a storage unit.
Three armed suspects entered the office, robbed it of cash and took wallets and cell phones from employees before fleeing on foot, police said.
The other new details from officials include: a Walnut Creek worker was pistol whipped in the back of the head and the only woman — Kianna Lynn Baker who is the mother of a suspect — helped two 2 escape and she had possession of the key to the safe that held the money.
On Wednesday in court a judge denied lowering the bond for the four of five who appeared in court.
According to police, those now charged are:
Javeal Aaron Baker (DOB 11/7/97) has been charged with six counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, five counts of second degree kidnapping and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Jamell Cha Melvin (DOB 3/30/82) has been charged with six counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, five counts of second degree kidnapping and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. Melvin also faces drug charges.
Kianna Lynn Baker (DOB 9/12/81) who is the mother of Javeal Baker, has been charged with accessory after the fact to robbery with a dangerous weapon. She also faces drug charges.
Lorenzo Demarcus McNeill (DOB 6/24/95) has been charged with accessory after the fact to robbery with a dangerous weapon. He also faces a weapons charge and drug charges. Officials said Wednesday that McNeill helped the three men hide the stolen money in a storage facility
Shymale Malik Robertson (DOB 8/30/96) has been charged with possession of stolen property. Shymale Malik Robertson did not make a court appearance.
During the robbery some items were taken from employees, police said.
“I didn’t recognize the voices,” the caller said.
The caller also said the suspects did not use names to address each other.
“They knew where the money was kept,” the caller said. “I’ve done this for 20 years and this has never happened.”
In addition to converging on the crime scene, Raleigh police and other law enforcement personnel searched surrounding area, police said.
The 911 dispatcher tells the caller police are using the stolen phones to possibly track the suspects.
A short time later, a Wake County Sheriff’s Office deputy detained an individual walking in the vicinity.
In addition to making Tuesday’s arrests, “detectives recovered additional currency believed to be connected to the robbery,” police said, without disclosing the actual amount taken or recovered.
The investigation of the case is continuing.
