WAYNESVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Authorities say a man was killed in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement at a church in western North Carolina.
A State Bureau of Investigation news release said Wednesday’s shooting happened after officers from two police departments and the sheriff’s office responded to an emergency call claiming four people were shot.
The SBI says 44-year-old Wade Allen Baker of Clyde was pronounced dead after a short standoff.
No one else had been shot as the 911 caller claimed, and no one else was at the church in Waynesville. No officers were hurt.
Haywood County Sheriff’s Sgt. Heidi Warren has said officers exchanged gunfire with the man, but it’s not clear how many fired or how the shooting started.
