SALISBURY, N.C. (WBTV) – Congratulations are in order for the Rowan County 11 and 12-year-old girl’s softball team for bringing the 2015 Little League World Series title back to Salisbury.
The LLWS tournament was played out in Portland, Oregon. for the past week.
The Rowan County team representing North Carolina and the Southeast was able to reach the championship game and then to close the deal, defeating the East representative from Warwick, Rhode Island, 4-2 Wednesday night.
Rowan jumped on East early on its way to a 4-2 win on Wednesday at Main Field in six innings, scoring four runs in the first inning.
Rowan would not relinquish the lead as East was unable to weather a four-run first inning deficit.
East scored on an RBI single by Dyonna Rodas in the third inning and a groundout by Hailey Mackinnon in the fourth inning. Despite its efforts, East couldn’t get over the hump.
Allison Ennis got a hit in each of her three at bats for Rowan. She singled in the first, second, and fourth innings.
Kali Morton was a workhorse on the rubber while bagging the win for Rowan. Morton allowed one earned run, four hits and one walk while striking out three over six innings of work.
Sierra Ricci was the game’s losing pitcher. She lasted just one-third of an inning, walked one, struck out none, and allowed four runs.
The Rowan County team is set to have a parade for their amazing accomplishment back home in downtown Salisbury on Saturday at 10 a.m.
