Shaw mourns student who died in motorcycle wreck

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Friends turned out at the Shaw University campus Thursday to remember a third-year student died in a motorcycle accident Wednesday in Raleigh.

Bryant D. Williams, 26, from Jessup, Georgia, lost control of his vehicle while traveling north on Carthage Circle, Raleigh police said.

Many students and faculty turned out Thursday afternoon for a prayer vigil in the Thomas J. Boyd Chapel on Shaw University’s campus.

Williams was a recreation management major and also was in the Platinum Sound Band, the university said.

At Thursday’s vigil, friends said Williams devoted his time and talents to the band, but devoted his life to his 5-year-old daughter.

Williams even left school for several years to take care of his little girl before going back to complete his education.

Williams’ best friend Andre Haden said he will not let the little girl forget her father.

“Just by being there for her, never letting her forget what her dad meant to her to everybody always being a constant reminder of who her father was and how much he loved her,” said Haden.

Shaw University President Tashni Dubroy said losing a fellow Bear is always saddening.

“But to lose one as young and promising as Bryant is heartbreaking,” said Dubroy. “To say that this is a shock to the Shaw University family is huge understatement.”
