NC jobless rate worse in July: more looking, fewer working

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina’s unemployment rate is rising for the fifth straight month to 5.9 percent.

The North Carolina Commerce Department released figures Friday showing the unemployment rate for July climbed as nearly 12,000 fewer people held jobs. The June unemployment rate was 5.8 percent.

July’s unemployment rate for the entire country was 5.3 percent and has been trending lower than North Carolina’s.

The state has seen an increase of 136,000 jobs in the past year, but the number of jobless has also increased by 2,000 in that time.

North Carolina has now lost most of the improvements in the unemployment rate achieved earlier this year.
