Man arrested, charged in Duke student’s sexual assault

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – A man suspected of sexually assaulting a female Duke student early Thursday morning was arrested Friday morning in Durham, Duke officials said.

Ahmad Hezam, 45, of Durham, was arrested at his apartment on Morreene Road. He is facing a second-degree sexual offense charge.

The incident happened at approximately 1:45 a.m. on Thursday on Science Drive and was reported Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

The student reported that at around 1:30 a.m. she took a taxi from Shooters II on West Morgan Street with other students and that the incident occurred after the other passengers had left. She told authorities that she was inappropriately touched by the driver while still in the vehicle. She said she was able to get out of the taxi and run away.

Hezam is being at the Durham County jail under a $500,000 bond.
