RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Briley Brind’Amour’s famous last name was not enough to quench the doubts on the volleyball court.
“I came in my freshman year not really knowing what to expect,” said Briley Brind’Amour, daughter of former Carolina Hurricanes captain Rod Brind’Amour.
It didn’t take long though for Briley to make her mark on the court.
She was a starter as a freshman for a state championship team.
And while the Brind’Amour name is well known in the Triangle, Briley Brind’Amour has blazed her own path with a little help from her father.
“I’m not sure how much he knew at the time but he’s learned along the way,” Briley admitted of her father’s volleyball knowledge.
“He definitely encourages me and coaches me in workouts because that’s kind of his go-to thing,” she said.
Rod Brind’Amour was known for his physical fitness, it’s a trait he’s passed along to Briley Brind’Amour as well as her hockey playing brother, Skylar.
“He wants us to be the best we can and he knows by pushing us that he will do that,” Briley Brind’Amour stated.
That recipe has worked just fine for Briley who’s been an all-conference performer since her freshman year.
“She’s a tremendous athlete and one of the most driven players we’ve ever had here,” said Cardinal Gibbons volleyball coach Logan Barber.
And Barber never worried about how Briley Brind’Amour would handle the added expectations that come with the name Brind’Amour.
“People will probably expect a lot more from her,” said Barber. “But then again not as much as she’s expecting from herself. So I think there’s some extra pressure there but she does a great job managing it.”
“Volleyball girls don’t really know hockey,” joked Briley Brind’Amour.
But they know talent when they see it.
Like her father who won a Stanley Cup, Briley Brind’Amour has had huge success as well.
Her school, Cardinal Gibbons, has won 63 straight matches and three straight state titles.
